– CLOSING AFTER SCHOOL

Discussion:

All activities are being finished by 6 pm today. This meets our definition of a “closing after school” event.

Updated: 550 PM 22 JAN 2017

Probability of a FULL CLOSING 40%
Probability of a DELAYED OPENING 0%
Probability of a FULL CLOSING OR DELAYED OPENING 40%
Probability of school opening at NORMAL TIME 60%

In the event that SCHOOL DOES OPEN…

Probability of an EARLY CLOSING 50%
Probability of a CLOSING AFTER SCHOOL 30%
Probability of an EARLY CLOSING OR CLOSING AFTER SCHOOL 80%
Probability of school remaining open ALL DAY 20%

Discussion:

Need to increase probabilities because of a low potential for hurricane force gusts tomorrow. Driving conditions are appearing more dangerous.

Updated: 603 AM 22 JAN 2017

Probability of a FULL CLOSING 15%
Probability of a DELAYED OPENING 0%
Probability of a FULL CLOSING OR DELAYED OPENING 15%
Probability of school opening at NORMAL TIME 85%

In the event that SCHOOL DOES OPEN…

Probability of an EARLY CLOSING 35%
Probability of a CLOSING AFTER SCHOOL 20%
Probability of an EARLY CLOSING OR CLOSING AFTER SCHOOL 55%
Probability of school remaining open ALL DAY 45%

Discussion:

It is unusual for a nor’easter producing only rain to cause school closings or delays on Long Island. However, with a low potential for gusts up to 70 mph, school impacts are on the radar. Since the strongest winds will occur toward the early evening Monday, a delayed opening would not make sense. Probabilities of a full or early closing remains on the low side.
